Bloody Uncle: Binary, Differance, and Privilege in Shakespeare’s Hamlet There is the idea in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, that Hamlet is still and will forever be mourning his father’s murder. No matter how hard Claudius tries, he will not be able to fill the role of Hamlet’s father due to the fact that he murdered Hamlet’s father and immediately married his mother. Claudius can consider himself the â€Å"loving father† as much as he wants, however, it is in the theme of the play for him to be the opposite toward his nephew/son (ACT IV scene iii). The differance is that Hamlet ends up with two fathers as one, instead of leaving behind one and accepting the other. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare utilizes binary, differance, and privilege to celebrate the indecipherable relationships between Hamlet, Claudius and Old King Hamlet. That no matter what Claudius will be responsible for the loss of Hamlet’s father, and the sexual experiences of his mother therefore, never being able to be the father figure to Hamlet. In this situation, difference appears when Hamlet is not able to let go of his father and accept Claudius in the role of the father figure. This causes Hamlet to lash out at Claudius in ACT IV scene iii around line 45 â€Å"†¦ Farewell, dear mother†. In this quote Hamlet is mocking Claudius’ idea that he can be his loving and caring father. By referring to him as his mother, he is essentially telling Claudius that he knows that he killed Old King Hamlet and that he will never be
